When the feminists began to become very articulate and write articles and march and go meet in camps and have magazines and so on, I always said, ‘That’s interesting, they’re having these huge meetings about feminism and the power of women and they’re leaving all their Black maids at home,’ but that was indeed that separation which was race separation, perhaps even a class one, was very pronounced to me and some African-American writers. I think Alice Walker has chosen other names for that—womanist as oppose to feminism and so on. The absence of those fierce black women no matter what the circumstances and difficulty one had in negotiating socially, I’d go into a house somebody of somebody of stature and they introduce me to their housekeeper and I say, "Hello, Mrs. Jones,’ and then I’m spoken to later by the mistress of the house says, ’ Why did you call ‘Mrs. Jones’? I call her ‘Hattie’," and I say, "I would never call a woman of age by her first name—never." So, differences were pronounces culturally and racially.

just a few of the signs we made today for our rally on april 24 starting at 8:30AM! thanks to everyone who came out.

these are fantastic!  i’m so excited to see femmepowered and open gates MHC create a similar campaign at mount holyoke.  i know both colleges are worried (to varying degrees) about reactions from alumnae, but this alumna supports you—and trans women’s inclusion—100%.

when girls think they are better than other girls because they are tomboys who engage in stereotypically “male” activities it makes me want to actually gouge my own eyes out because they are pretty much reinforcing the patriarchal idea that men are better than women without even realizing it and that is just incredibly sad

Today’s Junior Scientist Power Hour is all about ladies and their weird periods! What are periods? We don’t really know. But you can always tell when a woman is on her period because she has opinions that men don’t like, and sometimes they get mad!

It’s not like women get mad any other times, or that even if a woman is on her period, you should still listen to the words she says and not write them off as “crazy uterus talk”

"White feminism" does not mean every white woman, everywhere, who happens to identify as feminist. It also doesn’t mean that every "white feminist" identifies as white. I see "white feminism" as a specific set of single-issue, non-intersectional, superficial feminist practices. It is the feminism we understand as mainstream; the feminism obsessed with body hair, and high heels and makeup, and changing your married name. It is the feminism you probably first learned. "White feminism" is the feminism that doesn’t understand western privilege, or cultural context. It is the feminism that doesn’t consider race as a factor in the struggle for equality.

White feminism is a set of beliefs that allows for the exclusion of issues that specifically affect women of colour. It is “one size-fits all” feminism, where middle class white women are the mould that others must fit. It is a method of practicing feminism, not an indictment of every individual white feminist, everywhere, always.

being a feminist is like trying to fix a giant hole in the wall and discovering that the entire wall is rotting and filled with termites and you have a lot more work to do than you thought you did

And also the termites verbally attack you while you fix the wall.

"NOT ALL TERMITES ARE LIKE THAT"
